Resources for Understanding World Religions

General information on different religions is best found on the Internet by working from well-established and reputable sites. Religion can be a volatile subject, and there are sites on probably every religion that are posted by harsh and even misinformed critics. It is best to begin with online encyclopedias and work out from their links. Some suggested starting places are:

Wikipedia -- an interesting on-line resource that allows "distributed" editing (users can suggest revisions / additions that others will then ultimately allow to stand or revise). The result in terms of entries on major religions are contributions that scholars would commend and adherents consider fair.

Encarta -- Microsoft's longstanding online encyclopedia which is now following Wikipedia's lead in allowing editorial revisions to be suggested by users.

Encyclopedia of Religion and Society -- a resource maintained by scholars of religion by providing information in a format accessible to the general public.
